This was the ground floor. A large oak door would allow entry from outside, but for safety reasons, access to the upper floors of the tower was only through a trap door set in the vaulted ceiling. It was used for storage, not animals, and might have had a section used as a dungeon as well.
The first floor of the tower was reached by a wooden forestair, which could be taken apart or burned if necessary when the tower was under attack. The surrounding barmekin wall would serve to shelter animals, and there was a walkway along the crenelated barmekin wall where the residents could take up defensive positions.
